Driven by Drivers

Most things related to computers have a ‘driver’ involved somewhere or the other, whether it is a disk drive, printer, mouse or keyboard. A ‘computer driver’ is a program that allows communication between a computer’s operating software and its hardware, or in other words, a program that controls a specific computer device. In most cases the ‘driver’ has to be loaded into the operating system when the hardware is added, though some come preloaded, such as for the ‘computer driver’ for the hard disk. ‘Drivers’ translate generic commands given by the operating system to the specialised commands for the device which only the devices’ ‘driver’ knows. Moreover, different operating systems have to have different ‘drivers’ for the same hardware. For example, the ‘driver’ for a printer attached to a computer operating on the Windows system will not work when the printer is attached to a Mac computer.

Other than the ‘computer driver’ (for the hard disk) mentioned above, there are a number of devices connected with or to a computer that need ‘drivers’ and the commonly known ones are:

  • The ‘graphic card’ or ‘video driver’ – This is a circuit board with program(s) that control the computer monitor. So, whether we are playing a video game, or watching a movie, or downloading something from YouTube, or touching up a picture, or …. the ‘video driver’ or video card may have a hand in each of these activities. However it is not as though all the computer monitor’s display related activity requires ‘video drivers’, because the operating system itself has programming to control this. These cards also provide extra memory space to the computer (random access memory or RAM) and have fast processors the use of which becomes vital when the system is doing complex visual tasks such as running video games or processing 3D graphics. Most current video cards can control more than one monitor at any one time.
  • The ‘sound card’ or ‘sound driver’ – Also called the audio card, this controls all aspects of sound signals. Its basic function is to convert the analog signal (which we can hear) to the binary digital code that can be stored in a computer’s memory. Most systems now have an integrated sound card, which is part of the mother board and offer microphone, speaker and line-in features. However, if more functions are required than can be handled by the built-in ‘sound driver’; for example the MIDI ports to connect musical instruments, then an expansion sound card attachment becomes necessary. This is especially true in the case of laptops and palmtops.

Other than the above, there are also ‘modem drivers’, ‘printer drivers’, ‘network cards’ that can be added to a computer, which would enhance its features. These ‘drivers’, whether sound,  video or any other, have to be compatible with the operating system to enable the hardware to work to its full capacity. The computer drivers also need to be kept updated as rapid changes and advances are synonymous with this industry and earlier versions may not work well, if at all, on the newer systems.
